First Oral GLP-1 Approved for Weight Loss

On December 22nd, the FDA approved Wegovy (semaglutide) as the first oral GLP-1 medication for weight loss. While oral semaglutide has been available since 2019 to treat type 2 diabetes under the brand name Rybelsus, oral Wegovy expands access beyond diabetes. It can be prescribed to adults with or without diabetes who meet eligibility criteria. In clinical trials, one in three people lost 20% or more of their body weight. The medication also helped participants maintain weight loss over time and showed cardiovascular benefits. Oral Wegovy is already available by prescription at pharmacies nationwide.
